Jeffrey Schox, Esq.
After graduating from the University of Michigan with a Mechanical Engineering degree, Jeffrey enrolled at George Mason University School of Law in their Patent Law Track as a night student. During the day, Jeffrey trained with L. Lawton Rogers, III at Rogers & Killeen. Upon graduation from law school, Jeffrey accepted a position with Harness, Dickey & Pierce in their Ann Arbor office. In a letter of recommendation, Mr. Ryan Massey (a partner at Harness, Dickey & Pierce) stated that he had been involved in training many associates through formal training programs and that, "Jeff stands out from this group of individuals as one of the brightest."
After three years, Jeffrey accepted a position to help grow the Ann Arbor office of Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, which ranks among the top patent firms in the United States, according to Intellectual Property Today magazine's current annual listing. At Brinks Hofer, Jeffrey filed his one hundredth patent application. Mr. Steven Oberholtzer (the managing partner in the Ann Arbor office) noted in a memo to the Board of Directors of Brinks Hofer that Jeffrey was given "unusually high levels of responsibility." This responsibility included coordinating the majority of patent applications for one of the largest technology-based clients of the firm (an automotive supplier with $21 billion in global sales), and training and managing new associates.
In late 2002, Jeffrey was asked by the University of Michigan to teach an engineering course in Intellectual Property law. Frustrated with the emphasis that large law firms place on the billable hours of their associates rather than the quality of the work of their associates, Jeffrey left Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione and accepted the teaching position. His graduate level course, ME509: Patents, Trademarks and Copyrights, grew from 40 students during the Winter 2003 semester to 80 students during the Winter 2004 semester.
Throughout this period, while teaching patent law and earning a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering, Jeffrey developed a business plan for a patent law firm that addressed the unique needs of inventors and entrepreneurs during the early stages of a new business venture. With this vision, Jeffrey founded the law firm of Schox PLC.
